Frequently Asked Questions
-
What makes Meta Music's approach different from traditional music lessons?
Our approach is different - we teach music as a language, learned by ear through immersion rather than starting with sheet music. Just as you learned to speak before reading, our students develop their musical abilities naturally and intuitively. Legendary musicians like Ray Charles and Stevie Wonder proved that reading music isn't a prerequisite for mastery - in fact, we've found that starting with sheet music often creates unnecessary barriers to early progress.
-
Do you teach students how to read music?
Absolutely! A signature aspect of our method is that we don’ start with reading music, but we absolutely teach musical literacy the moment it will be beneficial. We introduce reading music when it makes sense for each individual student's development.
Remember, you were functionally fluent in speaking your first language long before you learned to read it. This same principle applies to music - we establish a strong foundation of playing, creativity, and collaboration as a way of internalizing the foundations of music before introducing written notation.
-
Why do you teach multiple instruments instead of focusing on mastering one?
First, it’s important to know that we don’t have one way of doing anything. With that said, we've observed time and time again that students progress more rapidly when they learn multiple instruments simultaneously. Rather than limiting themselves to a single instrument, our students explore various instruments, which nurtures well-rounded musicians who gain a deeper understanding of music as a whole. This approach also allows students to take "brain breaks" during lessons by switching instruments, without actually pausing the learning process - which helps maintain focus and enthusiasm.
-
How successful is your approach with students who have dyslexia or ADHD?
We've had extraordinary success with dyslexic, ADHD, and other neurodivergent students.
Our approach removes traditional barriers by not forcing students to read music before they're allowed to play. This makes music accessible to many students who struggled with rigid, almost militaristic traditional methods.
We meet each student where they are, teaching them songs they love in a way that sparks passion, creativity, and nurtures a love for playing music that lasts a lifetime.
-
How long are your lessons?
Our lessons are 45 minutes long, with a 15-minute gap between sessions. This format is intentionally designed to:
•Ensure every student gets their full lesson time, even if running slightly late
•Allow teachers to reset and prepare between lessons
•Provide time for proper lesson recap and note-taking
•Keep our teachers fresh and energized throughout the day
•Give students the optimal learning window
-
What happens in a typical lesson?
Our lessons are immersive and project-based. Students learn to play by ear, collaborate with others, and even record their own music. Since we're a recording studio, any lesson can turn into a recording session when inspiration strikes. Students learn multiple instruments while focusing on songs they love, making the experience engaging and fun rather than feeling like traditional school.
-
How much do lessons cost?
The short answer is that it depends on what your goals are.
Private lessons range from $65-$89 per session and Semi-Private formats are approximately half that rate. We offer discounts for longer term memberships which also provide increased schedule flexibility and the convenience of “shareability” among family members.
With that said, our prices fluctuate based on capacity constraints, so you’ll need to speak with one of our team members for up-to-the-minute pricing details.
-
What's your membership cancellation policy?
For memberships, we have a student-friendly policy that requires 28 days' notice for cancellation. Once the notice to discontinue form is submitted, we simply count four weeks into the future and pause billing from there and the final bill is prorated to cover only the lessons (if applicable) beyond the next billing date within the 28 day window. Any unused lessons during the notice period are converted to make-up credits that don’t expire until 360 days after the last lesson.
Note: These credits can be used later, given to a friend or family member, or donated to a local non-profit.
-
What is your lesson cancellation policy?
The system automatically gives make up credits for any lesson cancelled more than 24 hours before the scheduled appointment.
Please use the Meta Music app to handle all routine scheduling matters because it removes the inherent delays of human to human communication. Proper notice is critical to maintaining a highly functioning schedule flow, so we urge all students to give us much more than 24 hours notice whenever possible.

Where is Meta Music located?
Meta Music is located in the “City Walk” shopping center in the heart of Sandy Springs. (It’s the Kroger shopping center across from Whole Foods)
Important note: Google and Apple Maps often navigate new students to the dumpsters behind Kroger… which isn’t ideal!
If you’re looking at the front of Kroger, head to the right and go down the small hill. You’ll find us between Hammond Dental and Young Chefs Academy.

-
Is Meta Music really a recording studio?
Yes! We're a hybrid music lessons and recording studio. This unique setup allows us to incorporate recording, songwriting, and production into the learning process.
In fact, many of our students have posted their own music on Spotify and Soundcloud, created right here as a natural part of the lesson process.
-
How much practice time is required?
In short, it depends on your goals. Quality and consistency matter more than raw quantity of time spent. Practicing for 5-10 minutes every day is far more effective than practicing for 30 minutes once per week.
We help students establish sustainable practice habits that fit their lifestyle and goals. The key is building momentum through regular, manageable practice sessions.
-
How long will it take to learn to play?
Everyone's journey is different, but students that actually apply our practice regimen find that they acquire skills rapidly because we focus on the “meta skill” of learning how to practice (learning how to learn).
Fun fact: this is where our name comes from. If one learns how to learn through deliberate practice, it unlocks the “compound interest”. Put simply, the more you learn, the more you can learn.
Because we focus on playing by ear and learning songs students actually want to play, most students start making music they enjoy relatively quickly. Our emphasis on multiple instruments also helps students progress faster by understanding music from different perspectives.
-
What if I don't get along with my teacher?
While this rarely happens (our teachers are pretty awesome!), there is absolutely no drama related to trying lessons with different teachers. In fact, we encourage it! You never know who you’re going to connect with, and the community aspect of our approach is a critical reason for its consistent, predictable success.
Your experience is our top priority, and our Student Success Team is always working to help students to find the teacher that best matches their learning style and personality.
-
Do you have opportunities for students to perform or play with others?
Yes! We offer group classes, jams, concerts, and many other opportunities to collaborate with fellow students (including groups and events for adults).
Meta Music is a home away from home for many students, and we actively foster a community of musicians who learn from and inspire each other, both staff and students.

What inspired the Meta Music method?
We’ve been very influenced by the work of Victor Wooten and his classic book “The Music Lesson”, Kenny Werner’s “Effortless Mastery” and Adam’s (Meta Music’s founder) own journey and prolonged struggle learning to play guitar. Ultimately, the struggle was a blessing because it necessitated creative innovation to survive music school. This process led him to the shocking discovery that learning how to play multiple instruments actually made him a much better guitar player. This became the genesis for years of experimentation “doing the exact opposite” of the entrenched traditional methods. This lead to consistent breakthroughs for countless students that had previously been told that, for one reason or another, they’d never learn how to play. After 10 years of refining the method, Meta Music Education was born on July 31st, 2017 and we are committed to continued innovation, cutting edge techniques that leverage artificial intelligence, and profoundly engaging “analog” experiences that create an experience you won’t find anywhere else.
